The snow has started falling and we’re just weeks away from Christmas. According to the BBC this is the earliest snow fall ever in 70 years. There is no better time to get in the festive spirit that with your work colleagues at your Christmas party. Last year we saw a huge rise in the number of companies that hosted fancy dress parties across the country.
Only a few of these Christmas parties had specific themes, whilst most was open ideas for Christmas costumes.
There are so many Christmas costumes on the Internet with many of them available at discount prices. A popular choice for costumes over the Christmas period include Father Christmas, Santa’s Elfs, sexy Miss Santa Claus and many novelty accessories.
However much you decide to spend on your Christmas costume is down to your budget. Some of the slightly more expensive costumes are much higher quality making the whole experience much more authentic. Costume parties where people dress up in a variety of fancy dress outfits are now most commonly held during Halloween celebrated on the 31st October. The name comes from the feast of All Hallows or All Saints Day celebrated on the 1st November in honor of all the saints. The Halloween festival is actually a celebration of the end of the harvest in Gaelic culture and spread to America with the Irish immigrants and became part of popular culture.
We have all heard a lot about the fancy dress party but how many of us actually know and truly understand the origin of the fancy dress clothes party. The origins of fancy dress costumes and that of a fancy dress party can be traced right back to the fifteenth century in Italy. This is when the first masquerade balls or masked balls were held. These masquerade balls then developed into public festivities where elaborate dances were performed in fancy dress clothes. The fancy dress party is mostly organized and held for the upper class. Eventually, the fancy dress party became especially popular in Venice, Italy.
On the other hand, here in the United Kingdom, masquerade fancy dress balls only started to gain popularity during the eighteenth century and it was only by the Victorian era that the fancy dress parties were held similar to todays’ fancy dress parties.
Halloween traditions include ‘trick or treating’, making bonfires, visiting haunted houses and of course dressing up in fancy dress costumes and attending costume parties. Halloween fancy dress themes usually involve dressing up in a scary fancy dress costume like traditional ghost costumes and witch costumes.
More modern alternatives like the scary movie ghost costumes, Dracula and other vampire costumes, Pirate Costumes, Zombie Costumes and other scary film characters like The Addams family and Leatherface, the star of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre are becoming increasingly popular.
Even though these are the more popular fancy dress clothes, you could actually choose to wear those that you are more comfortable with as well as in favour with. This is important because if you are not comfortable with the fancy dress clothes that you wear for the costume party, it is difficult for you to enjoy yourself.
Besides that, we are also seeing an evolution in the costume party. Today, we are seeing a lot of these parties being held during the movie openings of blockbuster movies as well as the book releases of topseller authors.
